About the Job
New Student Engagement Coordinator
Position Summary:
This position is part of the Student Engagement and Intercultural
Initiatives team within International Student and Scholar Services
(ISSS), focusing on student transition initiatives and services.
This team serves all international students from non-degree,
undergraduate, graduate, and professional school students. This
position will work in collaboration with the New Student Transition
Team, Undergraduate Recruitment, Sponsored International Students,
International Student Exchanges, and GO Minnesota (short-term study
options). Responsibilities are designed to ensure a smooth
transition from admitted student status through confirmation and
enrollment of international students at the University of Minnesota
Twin Cities. This position will be supervised by the Director for
Student Engagement in ISSS.
As ISSS priorities shift over time, responsibilities may also shift
accordingly to focus more heavily on one area or the other.
Job Responsibilities:
Program Development and Oversight (30%)
-Manages the virtual pre-arrival International Student Preparation
Course (iPrep) including development, design, updating,
implementation, and monitoring on the Canvas learning management
system
-Designs and develops the international student parent
communications and events with Orientation and Transition
Experiences (OTE) and Parent Program in August
-Advises the International Student Ambassadors and MATCH
program
-Provides work direction for student leaders, program participants,
and volunteers in various program areas including the Global Gopher
Experiences (GGE) for new students; liaison with the Global Gopher
Leadership team members and the Global Gopher Influencer team
social media team
Program Delivery and Coordination (40%)
-Plans and implements virtual and in-person Global Gopher
Experiences. These experiences are designed to orient new students
with various U of M offices that they will work with during their
time at the University, such as Off-Campus Housing, Academic
Resources, and Boynton Health Services
-Assists with planning and implementing in-person orientation
series each August and January for new international students
arriving to the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities
-Partners with the Office of Housing and Residential Life on the
coordination of International student early arrival housing,
including creating clear and concise communications and assisting
with move out from the early arrival housing into their permanent
on and off campus housing placements
-Plans and participates in international event management and
international educational program delivery, including: in-country
presentations, admitted student educational programming, etc.
-Travels internationally and domestically to build relationships
and understanding about US educational opportunities generally and
UMN degree program opportunities specifically
-Designs, manages, and implements educational events in
international contexts about US education and opportunities
specific to UMN students
Outreach and Communications (20%):
-Promotes the University at national and international events or
conferences
-Represents the University through campus visits, which may include
fairs, meetings with prospective students and parents, high
school/community college/ESL staff and faculty, information
sessions, and presentations.
-Helps coordinate training and meetings with campus partners and
students.
-Coordinates campus partner outreach related to new student
communications and processes new international students need to
understand (example, create/edit content in
communications/publications such as iPrep, advisor handbook, FAQ,
new student emails, website updates, etc.).
-Coordinates communications (emails, MailChimp, social media,
newsletters) in collaboration with the GPS Communications team
-Assists with email responses from prospective and new
students.
-Provides administrative support to the scholarship committees
Advising and related Support-10%
-General Student Advising for F-1 and J-1 students on regulation
issues and referrals to campus resources
-Provide document preparation and assistance of collecting
documents and information needed for new student arrival
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
-MA + 2 years of relevant experience or BA/BS + 4 years of relevant
experience in the following fields of studies: international
education, higher education, counseling, social work, or a related
degree
-Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
-Effective written and oral communication skills.
-Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse team of
people.
-Ability to handle multiple tasks during the same time frame.
-Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
-Work, study, travel abroad or relevant domestic multicultural
experience.
-Demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate programs.
Preferred Qualifications:
-Experience with University of Minnesota policies, systems and
applications such as Sunapsis and PeopleSoft.
-One or more years of personal and academic counseling and/or
crisis counseling/management experience, or managing a diverse team
(students or staff).
-Multilingual skills (more than one language professional
proficiency).
-Ability to travel internationally and domestically.
-Strong inclusion and student centered focus.
-Experience in adapting to ambiguous situations and pivoting when
priorities shift.

foreign nationals into the community; by providing intercultural
training for students, staff, and faculty; and by offering events
that build links between the U.S. and international communities on

on issues related to international students and scholars in their
