Job Description:

The Software Engineerdevelops a variety of computer applications and cloud-based tools for educational solutions and delivery systems. This position is for a full-stack developer who is responsible for multiple simultaneous projects. The Software Engineer has a broad range of responsibilities from development, testing, deployment, and operations. This position leads the technical direction for the web development team and is a trusted source of expertise for the Company. The Software Engineer reports to the Engineering Manager and partners with consultants and other external partners to develop optimal solutions for end users.

This position primarily works remotely from their home office with periodic visits to the Eau Claire office and consulting firms.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops web-based educational tools and delivery systems following the software development lifecycle
  • Collaborates with other developers and engineers to design, build, maintain and implement optimal cloud-based solutions
  • Communicates across departments and translates requests into action plans for the development team
  • Participates in user testing, gathers information from consumers, and captures results
  • Develops and implements policies, standards and procedures for engineering and technical work performed
  • Maintains backups and sandbox systems
  • Writes status reports, specifications, work instructions, and other engineering documentation
  • Provides on-call support as necessary
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends and shifts in technology utilized by the Company to understand advantages and limitations of tools and technology available to the design team
  • Writes and maintains code
  • Designs user interface and web layout using HTML/CSS practices
  • Maintains bugs reporting and source code control systems
  • Monitors technical performance of systems
  • Performs other additional duties as assigned or required
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
    • Knowledge of databases and operating systems, particularly in modern cloud systems
    • Knowledge of network topologies
    • Knowledge of server security practices and implementations
      • Knowledge of systems engineering and product development of systems including software, electronics, and mechanical elements
      • Knowledge of system testing and validation, with ability to direct test activity to ensure requirements have been met
      • Well-developed tactical planning and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines
      • High level of attention to detail and critical thinking ability, with emphasis on excellence and innovation
      • Ability to learn new software and technologies quickly
      • Ability to follow instructions and work in a team environment
      • Ability to lead, motivate, and direct internal and external resources
      • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
        REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
        • Bachelor's degree inComputer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or similar technical field
        • 3+ years of relevant professional software development experience
        • Demonstrated ability to develop LAMP (or equivalent) stack software applications
        • Working knowledge of programming languages (PHP, C/C++, Java), modern web technologies (JavaScript, HTML5, SQL, CSS), or similar technical proficiency
        • Experience with rapid development cycles in a web-based environmentDESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
          • Experience as a technical project manager or aptitude to lead project teams
          • Experience building for and on the cloud and developing and implementing cloud services
          • Experience performing embedded, desktop, mobile, and server-side software development
          • Expert troubleshooter with strong debugging and problem-solving skills
